Chapter Thirteen

Bang. Bang. Bang.

My heart lunged into my throat as I rocketed out of bed at the wall-shaking pounding. Adam’s room was draped in early morning light, soft and grey, streaming in through the open window. I located my terry cloth robe and slipped it on over my oversized t-shirt that served as a nightgown. The wood floors were freezing, and I tap-danced in place for a moment before sliding my feet into my slippers. “What in the Otherworld is going on down there?”

My question was met with a muffled grunt. Adam had commandeered my pillow and smashed it over his head. “Adam, wake up!”

Adam heaved a sigh as he tossed aside the stolen pillow. “Jeeves popped by yesterday and told me they were having a crew start work in the morning. Apparently, they aren’t familiar with noise ordinances.”

“We haven’t even had a chance to tell Posy what’s going on!” I protested, heading for the door. “They can’t start tearing things apart!”

Bang. Boom. Craaaash.

“Was that glass breaking? Oh, stars. If they broke the china hutch—”

I didn’t wait for Adam. He moved like a geriatric turtle first thing in the morning. Instead, I scampered from the master suite and ran down the main staircase. Following the sound of voices and another series of banging noises, I found three men in hard hats standing beside a humungous hole in the wall where the kitchen door had once stood.

“Merlin’s beard!” I yelped, panic ricocheting around my chest. “No! No, no! Stop this!”

My legs started moving of their own accord and the next thing I knew, I was standing between a beefy, sledgehammer-wielding man and the half-demolished wall of the kitchen. I threw my arms out wide, blocking him from taking another swing. “Stop!”

“Holly!” Adam stumbled into the room, alarm in his eyes. “What are you doing?!”

“I’m protecting the manor!” I said, defiance in my tone as I lifted my chin. “This is our home!”

The man holding the sledgehammer looked to a taller man beside him. “Boss?”

The boss leveled me with a firm glance. “Ma’am, I’m going to need you to step aside. We’re here to do a job.”

“Holly, come on, this isn’t safe. That wall could come down.” Adam reached for me, but I slipped away from him. “It is a little early for this,” he complained to the workers. “We were told there would be a crew coming, but maybe we could save the banging and hammering for a more decent hour.”

“Unfortunately, we’re on a bit of a deadline,” the boss replied. “The wires got crossed somewhere along the way, and our painters are scheduled to come in six days, which means we need to get all the drywall up and the debris cleared out in time for them to be able to do their work.”

“Why are you taking this wall down?” I demanded. “It’s a perfectly good wall! It’s probably structural to the house!” I bubbled a nervous laugh as their brows collectively furrowed. “That’s right!” I said, pointing. “I watch
